Sam Asghari made a very rare comment on ex-wife Britney Spears’ conservatorship battle, admitting that it was ‘the weirdest thing to deal with’.

The Traitors US star, 30, ended his marriage to the Toxic singer, 43, in 2023 – just 14 months after they got married.

He was by the pop icon’s side during the majority of her conservatorship battle, and they announced their engagement just days after she was finally freed from the controversial court order in 2021.

Looking back on the strict rules that the mom-of-two was under between 2008 – 2021, during an appearance on the Sibling Revelry podcast, he explained that it was ‘the most difficult’ thing that he witnessed in their romance.

‘Everything was going really well until one day I started learning about what the conservatorship is,’ he told host Oliver Hudson. ‘That’s when I was like, “Wait a minute. I thought I’m in America. What do you mean?

‘”What do you mean that someone over the age of 18 needs permission from their parents?” and all these ridiculous things. I’m very new to this, everybody is, it’s such a ridiculous thing in this country to have to deal with.

‘That was by far – I’m not going to say difficult, because I don’t think anything is difficult – that was the weirdest thing to deal with. Which is really strange to say, in Hollywood and entertainment…’

For 13 years, Britney’s dad, Jamie Spears had been in control of her wellbeing and financial matters – sparking fans to start the #FreeBritney movement.

In damning testimony, the Baby One More Time star branded the order ‘abusive’ – alleging that she was blocked from having another child, and was made to keep an IUD in her body.

After the conservatorship was terminated by a judge four years ago, she has continuously called out her family members for their part in the order.

Sam shared that he initially thought that the pressure of life in the public eye, and battling both the press and fans, would be the hardest aspect of fame – but he soon realized from being in Britney’s world, that this was not the case.

‘One of the hardest things to deal with when you go into entertainment is your parents and the people around you, and everything that happens, and everybody that comes into your life that’s taken advantage — that damages you because those are the people that are closest to you,’ he continued.

‘Usually, the people that are around you, the people that you allow into your circle, you are vulnerable to them. They take an advantage because they think you owe something to them or something, which is so ridiculous.

‘That was the most difficult and weird spiral thing that I’ve witnessed in my life, ever.’

When asked how he handled that situation, he said: ‘I think the best thing you can do is provide support in that moment. That’s what I did. I provided as much as I could.

‘Support, and be there, provide information that might be helpful, provide resources that might be helpful, and really try to understand why this even happened, why the conservatorship even happened to begin win.

‘It was a very difficult time.’

Touching on his decision to end their relationship, the model added: ‘Divorce, separation, break ups suck, for anybody. Of course it’s going to suck.

‘But I’ve always had the mindset of I’ll never be sad that it’s over, I’m always going to be grateful and happy that it ever even happened.’

The former couple first met in 2016, on the set of Britney’s music video for Slumber Party, and they soon began dating – before announcing their engagement in 2021.

They said their vows in 2022, marking the Crossroads star’s third marriage – following romances with Jason Alexander and Kevin Federline – who she shares sons Jayden and Sean with.

Many were left stunned when Sam ended their marriage just over a year after their nuptials, citing ‘irreconcilable differences’ as the reason behind the separation.

‘After 6 years of love and commitment to each other my wife and I have decided to end our journey together,’ he said on Instagram at the time. We will hold onto the love and respect we have for each other and I wish her the best always.

‘Asking for privacy seems ridiculous so I will just ask for everyone including media to be kind and thoughtful.’
